Description

This minor structure was interpreted as having developed before deposition of the St. Peter Sandstone. It was shown on Willman and Payne's (1942) map of the New Richmond Sandstone (Canadian), but not expressed in the St. Peter or younger beds. As mapped on the New Richmond, the axis trends roughly north to south, and no closure is indicated. A structure map by Kolata et al. (1983) of the Cambrian Franconia Formation (below the New Richmond) does not indicate the Dayton Syncline. Because Kolata et al. had better data than Willman and Payne, the existence of Dayton Syncline is questionable and use of the name should be discontinued.
