ICCI Abstract

As a small task in an ongoing ICCI project, the authors have been working with the industrial cooperators to: 1) Collect meaningful data on shield leg loading, and 2) Develop procedures for analyzing the data so that capabilities can be developed to discern ground conditions that result in varying shield loading characteristics. The team has made significant progress with enthusiastic support from both cooperators. Meaningful data is starting to be collected after ensuring that most of the pressure sensors are working properly and the shields are being set properly. Once the data quality is assured, the next step will be to compare the shield loading characteristics to determine if these are significantly different when the longwall face was crossing the fault as compared to when the longwall face was either 300 ft. behind or 300 ft. beyond the fault. The current task will culminate with this comparison.

With the above foundations, the project team now plans to embark on the next step in the proposed study to determine if ground conditions on the longwall face can be projected ahead using shield loading data analysis. Marco as well as the mining company are very interested to pursue this project and have agreed to collaborate again. The primary goals of this project will be to: 1) Assess if periodic loading, ground conditions and cavity formations can be related to well defined and discernible variations in shield loading characteristics, and 2) Determine if discernible variation in signatures above can be related to variable immediate roof lithology and/or geologic anomalies ahead of the face. This can be an excellent short-term mine planning tool that can help industry sustain productivity and profitability. Upon development of this technology it will help all the longwall mines in Illinois.
